Tuale Naija News:Former Osun state governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, resigns from APC

Former Governor of Osun State and acting coordinator of ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo's Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM), Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Olagunsoye announced his resignation from the ruling party in a letter addressed to the Chairman of APC in Ward 1, Okuku, Odo Otin Local Government Area of Osun State and dated May 9th 2018.

Olagunsoye who worked for the victory of APC during the 2015 election, said he was leaving the party so he can concentrate in his new political affiliation, CNM.
“My resignation from the APC, therefore, is to enable me contribute more meaningfully to ongoing efforts at repositioning the politics of Nigeria for the good of the Nigerian people,” he said.

In a releated development, the former governor has also resigned his appointement as the Chairman of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Read the letter below
“Sir, I write to resign my appointment as the chairman of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) with effect from today, 9th May, 2018. Your Excellency, I must put on record my very deep sense of appreciation for the special privilege and consideration you gave me to serve our fatherland in that capacity. As I stated in my appreciation letter to you shortly after the appointment, the offer was a clear call to service.
I gave the job the dedication it deserved and would have loved to continue but I regret to inform Your Excellency that I have a new, greater political engagement that will make that difficult and even impolitic. Sir, as one of my bosses in the army, I believe you would understand my stand given recent political developments. The training I got as a decorated officer and gentleman precluded me from engaging in any act that could amount to disloyalty and conflict of interest. I am moving on to chart a new course in my politics outside the ruling party and this thus, demands my dropping the NIMC chairmanship'.
“I thank you, sir, once again for the great honour and confidence reposed in me. However, there is time to take a job and another time to leave it and move on. For me, the time to work on something else in the interest and service of our people is now.

Tuale Naija News:52 year-old-man kills his 82 year old mother for ritual purposes in Anambra

A 52-year-old man identified as Christopher Okadigbo has been arrested for killing his 82-year-old mother, Rosaline Okadigbo, at their home in Anambra East local government area and removing her left eye and heart which he intended to use for ritual.

The police arrested the suspect and his accomplice, Ameke Udolu, after the first son of the octogenarian, Chief Innocent Okadigbo, received a call from his frightened mother on May 1st to report her son, Christopher's suspcious moves. She was found dead on May 2nd with her body parts removed.
“My mother told me on telephone on May 1, 2018 that my younger brother, Christopher came to her apartment with one Ameke Udolu and were moving round and making comments that were highly suspicious. My mother added that she was afraid of staying alone in her house due to the kind of utterances she overheard the duo make while moving round her apartment. In the early hours of May 2, 2018, less than 24 hours after my mother’s apprehensive telephone report to me, I received another call from one Pius Aniefule that my mother was found dead in the pool of her blood. Minutes after Aniefule’s call, my brother, Christopher, who stopped relating with me since 1999, also called to inform me of the incident, claiming that he traveled to Minna, Niger State from where people at home broke the news to him.”  he said
Corroborating the allegation, Aniefule said he raised an alarm, which attracted people in the neighbourhood and later telephoned his first son, Innocent on the gruesome killing of his mother.
“As people rushed to the scene, we saw Ameke Udolu coming out of one of the rooms of late Mrs. Rosaline Okadigbo’s house and we overpowered and held him. We collected his phone and uncovered some incriminating telephone communications between Udolu and Christopher, the second son of the deceased. When we got the phone, we forced him to make a call to Christopher and put on the speaker, which Christopher did not know. It was then that Christopher told Udolu to hurry down to Nteje junction if he had accomplished the job and wait for him there.”
Younger brother of the deceased, Chief Uyammadu Anaeliaku alleged that Christopher had previously been identified with fetish activities and appealed to the state government to assist the family by compelling him to exhume the charms he allegedly buried around their compound.
“My late sister Rosaline gave birth to eleven children and as we speak, only two are alive. The rest died under questionable circumstances.” he said
Both suspects are currently in police custody.

Tuale Naija Education:Protest rocks Ekiti Varsity over high internet fee

ADO-EKITI—STUDENTS of Ekiti State University, EKSU, yesterday, mounted barricades at the entrance of their institution in Ado-Ekiti, over exorbitant internet wireless connection charges imposed on them by the management..
                                                      EKSU

The irate students, who had gathered at the entrance of the University as early as 7:30 am, locked the main gate and prevented workers and students from accessing the gate for several hours. According to them, the N13,000 Internet wireless connection fee, for two semesters was too much for them to bear considering the high tuition and fees charged by the university. Clutching placards of various inscriptions and chanting  anti-management songs, they vowed that the protest would continue until the Internet wireless charge is reversed. Some of their placards read: ‘Enough is enough, we do not need a wireless Internet connection in the university; We don’t need your internet connections anymore; We are not ready to pay heavy charges anymore.’ One of the students, Miss Anjorin Kemisola, said: “I wish to say that I am not happy with the way the management of the Ekiti State University are charging us, our tuition fees have always been going up, department fees are exorbitant, presently they are charging us for wireless Internet connection that we do not use at all. I regret coming to this university.” Another aggrieved student, Ogundipe Gbenga said:  “They decided to embark on the peaceful protest to inform the management of the institution that they can no longer pay for Internet connection that is not useful to them. “Most times, the Internet connection is not always available for us to use and we prefer to subscribe to Internet services from the telecommunication outfits such as MTN, GLO, Airtel, among others. “Most of us use phone with various communication data, so, we don’t use the school internet connection because it is not useful to us. “We, therefore, want to appeal to the management to remove the wireless internet connection from the school charges because it is not convenient for them and their parents.” One of the students’ representatives, Bayo Asaolu, accused the management of not being considerate and do not sympathise with their parents, who are yet to receive eight months salaries from the state government. He said: “We are out this morning to protest and not to fight or destroy the University property, because we are tired of the charges the  university often asks us to pay every semester.”  I’m not aware of any protest —Deputy Registrar When contacted, the Deputy Registrar, Information and Corporate Affairs of the university, Mr Ajibade Olubunmi, who feigned ignorance of the protest, told   newsmen that he didn’t encounter any protest on his way to the campus. Olubunmi said: “I am not aware of any protest on this campus because  when I was coming to work, I did not see anyone protesting individually or in group or groups protesting, but I will investigate  and get back to you.”

Tuale Naija Education:TAX EVASION: OAU may resume today

OSOGBO—INDICATIONS emerged, yesterday, that the management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, and Osun State government may have resolved their disagreement occasioned by the non-remittance of taxes by the university.

                                                Obafemi Awolowo University

A top management of the university told  Vanguard  last night that a sum of N25 million had been paid into the state government’s account since last week. Confirming the payment, Special Adviser, Tax Matters to Osun State government, Mr. Gbenga Akano said the OAU management informed him that a sum of N25 million had been paid from the backlog. He said the institution may be reopened today (Tuesday), while further negotiations on the matter between the parties continue. It would be recalled that Osun state government had last week shut down the university alleging that a sum of N1.8 billion deducted from the institution’s staff salary as withholding tax was not remitted to the government. But the university, while reacting to government’s claim, dismissed the allegation, saying it never withheld the deductions, but it under deducted from staffers salaries. OAU management put the amount it owed Osun government in unremitted taxes at N287 million. Multiple sources in the know of various meetings between the two parties, however, reliably informed  Vanguard  that a sum of N 25million has been paid to the government. The source said: “There have been several meetings between the two parties to get the matter resolved. I can confirm to you that a sum of N25 million has been paid by OAU management to Osun state government. “Normal activities will return to campus very soon. The matter is partially resolved. Modalities to defray the outstanding sum are being worked out.”

Tuale Naija News: Facilitate collection of N463bn from TETFUND, Falana urges ASUU

OSOGBO—INDICATIONS emerged, yesterday, that the management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, and Osun State government may have resolved their disagreement occasioned by the non-remittance of taxes by the university.

                               Femi Falana
Falana, who disclosed that the tertiary institutions did not access N250billion from the account of TETFUND from 2011-2016 narrated that the sum of N213.4  billion is outstanding for 2017 alone.

Addressing the 20th Delegates Conference of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, at the Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi State,  Mr. Falana commended the union for the initiative which led to the enactment of the TETFUND Act in 1992. He said: “The sum of N463 billion is lying fallow at the Central Bank of Nigeria while public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education are underfunded.” He said that the 78 public universities are entitled to about 50 percent of the total sum of N463 billion in the TETFUND Account. Urging the TETFUND board to urgently review the cumbersome guidelines for accessing the fund, the lawyer  called on the ASUU and other campus unions to monitor the collection of the education tax, the disbursement, and management of the intervention fund by the authorities of tertiary institutions. He informed the ASUU leaders that, “due to the failure of the staff and student unions to monitor the fund over the years not less than N250 billion has been criminally diverted from the TETFUND by some unscrupulous school administrators with the connivance of the former board members of the TETFUND.” Mr. Falana advised TETFUND to stop imposing a ban on institutions from accessing the fund because some past administrators failed to render account of the monies collected by them, instead of imposing collective punishment on the innocent staff and students of such institutions, he suggested that TETFUND should submit names of such administrators to the police and the anti-graft agencies for investigation and possible prosecution. “Since successive governments have paid lip service to the funding of education, without the intervention of TETFUND the public tertiary institutions would have collapsed. As the various governments have failed to make provision for capital projects in public schools TETFUND has become the only source of funding infrastructural development and research in all the public tertiary institutions,” he said

Tuale Naija News:SARS Officials Dragged Me With My Manhood, Took N30,000 Before Releasing Me

A victim of police brutality has said that he paid N30,000 to the men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad last Thursday to secure his freedom when he was arrested on trumped-up charge of possessing Indian hemp.
He said the SARS officials stripped him naked and dragged him with his manhood when he resisted arrest.
He also claimed that the officers doused him with two canisters of tear gas.
The victim, 38-year-old Lucky Joseph, said his arrest was borne out of prejudice, saying he was familiar with the SARS officials, alleging that they all meet at the joint where Indian hemp is sold and smoked in their neighbourhood at Choba Extension in Obio Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
He alleged that the men of the SARS Unit of the Nigeria Police, who wanted to arrest him, actually had several wraps of marijuana on them, hence his refusal to go with them.
It will be recalled that Joseph’s ordeal was caught on a video that found its way to the web, sequel to which it became Internet sensation, shared by many people on various social medial platforms.
The person who shot the video had claimed that Joseph was rough-handled when he refused to present the receipt of his mobile phone.
However, our correspondent who tracked down the victim and spoke to him, authoritatively revealed that the SARS men manhandled Joseph for an entirely different matter.
Some residents of Odums Streets, Choba Extension in Obio Akpor Local Government Area where Joseph was stripped naked by the security operatives, explained that the victim was treated like “a common criminal.”
To prevent his forceful arrest or being shot as threatened by the SARS men, the residents said they contributed N30,000 among themselves and handed it over to the SARS operatives, who allegedly demanded it before Joseph could be released.
The highest donor was alleged to be the owner of a mechanic workshop where Joseph works.
The video and photos posted online indicated that Joseph was stripped naked by the security agents, who insisted that he must go with them, even as residents continued to plead on his behalf.
Our correspondent met the victim, who explained that the SARS men inflicted machete cuts on him without telling him his offence; adding that he decided not to follow them when he was told that the attempt to arrest him was because he was one of those smoking Indian hemp in the area.
He identified one of the SARS officials as ThankGod, known to some residents of the street.
Narrating his ordeal, he said, “I was just passing and when I got to this point, two SARS officers grabbed me from the back. They then went on to search me.
“They brought out only my handkerchief. When they wanted to put it back into my pocket, I refused and the hand of the officers and the Indian hemp in his hand fell down.
“When that happened, one of them quickly picked it and ordered me to enter inside their vehicle, which I vehemently.
“A huge crowd gathered and insisted that they wanted to know the exact place they were taking me to.
“Four of them (SARS men) began to drag me and stripped me naked. They began to drag me with my manhood, but I did not relent. I also dragged them because I believe I did nothing wrong.
“Two of them later brought out machetes and rifles. I told them that if they wanted to shoot me, they should go ahead and do so. I said that because I was sure I did not commit any offence.
“As we were dragging each other, some wraps of Indian hemp were falling off from their pockets.
“They began to use the machete to inflict injuries on my body and tried to handcuff me, which I resisted.”
Our correspondent learnt that when they eventually threw Joseph inside the boot of their car, the residents began to beg for the artisan’s freedom and were asked to pay N30,000.
Joseph maintained that it was after the N30,000 was handed over to the SARS officers that he was eventually released; adding that his entire body was inflicted with injury.
He said before the machete cuts, the security agents had emptied two  canisters of teargas on him.
